I have painted quite a lot in Cumbria. Aside from the fact that it is a very attractive landscape, part of the North of England, I worked for two years as artist in residence at the Village Bakery in Melmerby. I painted the views from the windows, including that of Cross Fell, one of the highest peaks in the Pennine hills. The lakes are spectacular, with the fells towering obove them, but I also like the villages of the Eden Valley where very few tourists from England ever venture. The softness of the valleys and hills, with their clothing of sheep and trees, tends to lead people to feel that the lakeland fells are benign, but the weather can make them dark and threatening places too. No wonder it inspires so many poets and painters.
